Since 2000 an enhanced framework for reducing ESL in the EU has been developed on the basis of the open method of coordination (OMC). The research results show that the OMC potentials should be better exploited in order to respect principles of good governance and to ensure more efficient attaining of the EU benchmark.

ESL situation in France
ESL rate in France was below 10 % in 2013 which is Europe 2020 target. In November 2014 comprehensive national strategy to tackle early school-leaving was approved, bringing together many different ESL policies and measures.

Contextualizing ESL factors with the PISA results
While the associations of socio-economic status with school achievement are well established, there is still need for investigation of interplay of additional factors playing a role in the risk of ESL. Early detection of this risk and increased effort for engagement with school are important in measures of prevention.
