Support for autonomy, efficacy and relatedness using school – community collaboration as a systematic ESL prevention tool

The paper analyzes the role of local community in ESL – with special focus on school-community collaboration and based on Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2008). School-community collaboration occurs when groups or agencies come together to establish an educative community. The educative community is composed of a multitude of educating entities such as school, home, places of worship, the media, museums, libraries, community agencies, and businesses (Drew, 2004). Research on the impact of community collaboration is ongoing. Some of the positive results found at schools practicing extensive community-school collaboration are improved reading and math performance, better attendance rates, a decrease in suspension rates and a decrease in the ESL rate (Schargel & Smink, 2001). In the paper we have explained mechanisms by which school- community collaboration affects achievement and attendance rates using Self-Determination Theory – SDT (Ryan & Deci, 2009). Self determination theory argues that people have three basic needs : (i) need for autonomy, (ii) need for competence and (iii) need for relatedness. All three needs are discusses in the paper in regards of school-community collaboration. It has been established so far that when these psychological needs are met in students their well being significantly increases and their knowledge is conceptual (Ryan & Deci, 2009). The SDT theory has wide empirical support in various psychological fields, also in education. There have been also more specific connections between autonomy supporting environment and low level of ESL (Aliverninia & Lucidib, 2011). Our underlying assumption that is tested in the paper is that positive and ongoing school-community collaboration fosters students’ autonomy, competence and relatedness which consequently prevent ESL.
